Client’s Requirements
The new £11m Construction Centre at Barnsley College offers specialised state of the art facilities to students including specialised workshops for brickwork, plastering, wall insulation, roofing, joinery, painting and decorating, tiling and plumbing, gas testing for construction industry apprenticeships.
Silcock Leedham’s Contribution
Silcock Leedham was initially appointed by the college to carry out an initial brief, concept design and production of RIBA Stage D D&B tender information, for the appointed M&E contractor, to finalise the detailed design and produce construction information. We were subsequently retained by the client team as the client’s technical representative to monitor the contractor’s design and construction information to ensure it meets the contract specification and Barnsley College’s required standards.
Added Value / Unique Selling Points
We worked alongside the M&E contractor to develop the initial concept through to the complex co-ordination of the workshop LEV, electricity, data, water, paint spray booth ventilation and compressed air services distribution to the satisfaction and compliments of the architect and client. This ensured that we were able to maintain the client’s desire for a high standard of finish within the workshop.
We also created a full dynamic thermal model of the Construction Centre which was used to calculate the CIBSE loads to aid the engineering team’s design and to demonstrate that the proposed design would comply with Part L2A (2010) of Building Regulations and it would pass the BB101 overheating criteria. Finally, it was used to assist with the achievement of the required BREEAM rating of Excellent.
